In the snow, sleet and freezing rain, on a 35 degree January day in Walla Walla, we bottled just over 1300 cases of our next vintage, nearly doubling last year’s production.
We were grateful for the help of numerous friends who were willing to bear the wind and cold to help for the day (but seemed content to take home a few bottles of wine in appreciation for their hard work). We turned up the tunes, put on our hats and gloves, and cranked out all 1313 cases in a matter of hours. Amazingly, only a few bottles got broken, but we won’t hold it against cellar rat/co-owner, Chad Griepp. After all, it was the second to last box to come down the line, and by then fingers were sore and arms were worn out from hauling and stacking all those cases of wine. (Ok, so maybe the tape machine wasn’t working properly again and a couple bottles fell through the bottom of the box. Sure, Chad, that’s probably what happened.)

Now that any signs of bottle shock have disappeared, and with spring in the air, everyone is looking forward to one of Walla Walla’s biggest events—Spring Release Weekend! Held the first weekend in May, most, if not all, of Walla Walla’s 150+ wineries will open their tasting room doors and offer samples of their latest vintages, along with elaborate spreads of yummy cheeses, artisan breads, and fine chocolates.
This year’s Spring Release events will take place Friday, May 2nd through Sunday, May 4th. Our tasting room, located downtown at 7 West Poplar, will be open Friday 12-4:30, Saturday 11-4:30 and Sunday 12-4:00. We’ll be featuring our three new releases, 2006 Cali, 2006 Merlot, and 2006 Sangiovese (see detailed tasting notes on the wines page) along with artesian meats and cheeses. Stop by to meet our winemaker, Don Redman, and be the first to sample these great new releases. We think our 2006 vintage may be our best yet. Come taste for yourselves!

We finally completed the lengthy permit process and broke ground on March 7th for our new building, located near the airport at 720 C Street. The final plans, designed by Tandem Design and Construction, include 2880 square feet of space with a 680 foot tasting room and 2200 square feet of space for the winery and barrel storage.

In keeping with the design of the surrounding area, the design is of a rustic barn. It is a simple, yet elegant design, and very functional as a winery. We will use native prairie grasses and shrubs in our landscaping as they are more drought tolerant and fit into our environmental operating principals. (See more pictures of the building site and construction progress by downloading the pdf here.)
We hope to have it complete, and our new tasting room open, by the end of July. Maybe we’ll even have a little grand opening celebration. Be sure to come by and check it out!

Whew! Our first release is under our belt, crush of 06 is done, and we just finished bottling our 05 vintage for this years release.
First, I want to thank all our friends and family for the tremendous success we had in our first year. We truly feel blessed.
New Wines for 2007
We will be releasing 4 wines in May 2007. Last years Sangiovese was a hit and this year is poised to be even better. The fruit for this wine came from the famed Seven Hills Vineyard and will be a more Chianti style wine, lean with nice acid and very fruit forward.
The Merlot will be a vineyard designation from Pepper Bridge Vineyards. It will be 100% Pepper Bridge fruit, mainly merlot and a little cabernet sauvignon to spice it up.
The Cabernet Sauvignon is an 04 that will have been aged for 31 months. This cab is from the Lewis Vineyard and will be an monster. Big, bold tannins, yet silky smooth. Lots of blackberry and very fruit forward on the nose. I only made 50 cases and pre-sold 15 during the holiday barrel tasting so if you want to get some order now.
The last in my line up is my red table wine called Cali. Cali is my grandmother’s maiden name. This is going to be a Bordeaux style blend of primarily merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and a little bit of syrah and sangiovese.
Tasting Room Open
We opened a tasting room this past summer in downtown Walla Walla. It is a small space, but fits our needs. We will be open again this year from April 28th through December on Saturdays from 11:00-4:30. We will be open all weekend for the special events. Our address is 7 West Poplar St. We are also on the Walla Walla Wine Alliance map.
Wine Club for 07
There has been a lot of confusion about the upcoming wine club for 07. The wine club is a great way to save 15% off your purchase and enjoy our wines twice a year. The nice thing is you can order any one of my 4 wines and stop participating at any time. All you need to do is fill out the order form and mail or fax me your request. Click here to download an order form.
Watch for the upcoming winemakers dinner this spring.
